Sidney Plot: What’s the story?
Rising from his modest origins in Cat Island, Bahamas, Sidney Poitier’s inspirational journey is chronicled in this documentary as he reshapes American film history by becoming the first black and Bahamian man to win the prestigious Academy Award.
At a time when society was racially fragmented at the peak of the civil rights movement, Sidney Poitier overcame the flagrant racism rampant in 20th-century America. Proudly reclaiming his racial identity, Poitier asserted his calibre as a respectable black man and emerged as a mesmerising phenomenon in American cinema.
Refusing to play the “subservient” parts stereotypically assigned to black actors, Poitier combatted the racial inequality of opportunity as he broke the colour barrier in American cinema, holding his head high in a highly racialized society.
The documentary pays homage to the legendary actor with famous figures from Hollywood testifying to Poitier’s empowerment of the black community. Sidney glorifies Poitier’s paving the path for a future generation of black actors and actresses to establish themselves in the cinematic community.
